iPad Apps Available Across Curriculum Strands
Educational apps are now covering every subject imaginable, and are available on a wealth of different sub-topics. TCEA (Texas Computer Education Association) has developed a user-friendly table that helps to quickly access apps, free or otherwise, in areas including Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Special Needs, and Interactive Books.
Under “Mathematics” and “Telling Time”, you are directed to over a dozen apps that present this subject in interactive ways for children. Feel Time (free) allows users to manually change the time on the clock, read the analog time below, and change the screen shot of the sun or moon’s position in the sky to reflect the time shown.
Reading and writing are not without their pool to choose from as well. Under “Language Arts” and “Handwriting”, Little Sky Fallers ($2.99) aims to teach Kindergarten age students the sounds that letters make and how to properly form them while flying an imaginary plane through the sky! Who wouldn’t want stick it out to see how to make the letter D?
Those who need help organizing and planning across subjects can find graphic organizers, mind maps, and flow charts. Idea Sketch (free) allows users to draw outlines and plans onto the screen that are then converted into text and saved as files. Tools 4 Students ($0.99) provides pre-structured graphic organizers used for essay planning, story mapping, and reading comprehension skills.
If you’re an educator or a parent with an iPod, dive in and begin to explore the countless ways this tool can be used to support your children’s learning. There’s something for absolutely everyone.
